If you’re struggling with back and neck pain – or any other symptoms resulting from spinal health issues – it’s understandable that you want to find the best spine surgeon possible.
We all prefer to find a doctor by getting a personal referral from someone we trust. But not everyone knows someone who can make such a referral. That’s the reason for this post.
As a spine surgeon myself, I believe that I am well-qualified to point folks in the direction of some of the best spine surgeons in the US and, indeed, the world.
I hope that this curated list of spine surgeons—all of whom I know personally and trained with during my time at UCSF medical school, Harvard residency, and Emory fellowship—can act as a substitute for folks who don’t have anyone in their lives who can refer them to a surgeon directly.

What to Look for When Searching for the Top Spine Surgeons
We recognize that this list is quite short and that there are a lot of spine surgeons out there. So, if you’re continuing your research, here are some of the things you should look for while trying to find the best spine specialist for you:
- Board certification. Many of the top spine surgeons in the United States are board certified in orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery. Additionally, they usually have specific experience and knowledge in spinal surgery.
- Good patient outcomes. Reviews are important. They not only give you insight into the treatment philosophy of the spine surgeon, but also their bedside manner and results. Try to stick with surgeons that have good results for their patients.
- Hospital affiliation. Some hospitals are well-known for their spine surgery centers. Check to see if the surgeon works with a hospital that has good rankings for spinal surgery, such as Cedars-Sinai, Och Spine Hospital, etc.
These are just a few of the things you should consider when selecting the best orthopedic surgeon. Overall, it comes down to your needs as a patient and who can best serve those needs.
